Just after the new year I went down to Abraham Lake with my friend Joe Reimer. We arrived as the sun was setting and only squeaked out a couple photos each.
We had heard about the methane bubbles before and got lucky finding them. Looking back it really was like a needle in a haystack. I think maybe next time I will bring a blow torch and make the ice surface like glass. It was a bit rough and blurred the bubbles a bit. I suppose that would be changing nature and I would have to forfeit my photojournalist picture of the year award. Maybe I will leave the blow torch at home then... plus... not sure blow torching pockets of trapped methane gas is smart.
