In pursuit of photography and creating a balanced life I will change my online behaviours starting this Christmas Season and ending March 1, 2017. In short, I will try to increase my effectiveness by blocking out distraction. I have a few goals in mind I wish to accomplish:
- Write a Newsletter
- Archive my Negatives and Prints
- Make more Photos and Prints
- Edit family videos
- Enjoy life and be a Dad
I do these things already but I am sure I can be more effective. To accomplish this I will be culling my device and internet usage. I want to try to turn the overall noise level down and make sure the right noise gets through. Does that make sense? Here are a few examples:
No to Social Networks including Twitter and Tumblr. These are the only two networks I am using at the moment.
Yes to using Voice Calls, Slack, iMessage and Email to maintain relationships with people in different cities from me. I want to invest in my relationships. This includes investing in my family’s relationships and limiting phone use after work. I want my children to grow up and make memories of me that doesn’t include me holding a phone.
No to the internet… almost… lets not get crazy. I do have a short list of websites I will visit. A couple news sites like NY Times and CBC News. And a couple photo blogs, but that is it. I will limit my time on this. I do want to invest in my self education and trying to absorb random and sporadic bits through a multitude of sites does not seem effective.
Yes to books, discussions with mentors and good old fashioned trial and error. I might publish some photos to my website during this time, if I don't I am probably having to much fun.
No to Movies and Television. Self explanatory here.
Yes to watching movies with a friend at a cinema and investing in our relationship. And a yes to watching the Seattle Seahawks with my family as they win every week.
This seems like a bunch of rules. What I intended to show are examples of decisions I need to make and the motivations behind them. The simplest way to put this is the activities and things I do have an impact on my life; the health of my body, relationships, work, my creative projects. I must ask myself: Does this add value to my life? Can I add value to the lives around me? I look forward to seeing how I modify by behaviours and change my priorities over the next couple months.
My Son, Daughter and lovely Wife.
Catch you on the flip-side.
